Project Undertow is an evolution of the D.A.’s Office, which since 2005 has facilitated actors’ workshops with such artists as Rosemary Dunsmore, Dean Gilmour and Jim Warren. Project Undertow began to create original work in 2006, and has been commissioned by Buddies in Bad Times (Audience Relocation) and The Theatre Centre (Block in One Spot), and are recurrent guests with Clay and Paper Theatre (Day of De Light). Project Undertow appeared at the LabCab Festival 2007 with Dish, a new piece written and directed by Rosa Laborde. Project Undertow takes an active role in the Toronto theatre community. In May 2007, the collective was proud to host Josette Bushell-Mingo, OBE, Artistic Director of PUSH, a UK black theatre festival, and Artistic Director of The Deaf Theatre of Sweden. Project Undertow offered two master classes led by Bushell-Mingo on interdisciplinary ensemble theatre creation, one integrating deaf and hearing artists. In addition, Integrate: An Interactive Theatre Forum, produced by Project Undertow and Picasso Pro, was an exciting evening exploring diversity and disability in Canadian theatre.
